Acne (spots) is a condition that can really affect people’s self-confidence and mood. We associate it with adolescence but the condition can affect adults as well. It is characterised by papules (red spots), pustules (spots with pus), closed comedones (whiteheads) and open comedones (blackheads). It occurs because the pores become blocked by sebum (our natural moisturizer/oil) leading to redness which can be worsened by bacteria that lives on our skin.
Acne can be treated with gels and creams (topical) or with tablets. The aim of the treatment is to reduce the redness and to help the skin to be less oily. Agents that can help include drying agents (benzoyl peroxide), antibiotics and vitamin A medication (including Isotretinoin/Roaccutane). Severe acne can leave scarring which can be improved with laser/chemical peels but is obviously best avoided with early treatment for acne.
Dr Marie-Louise can discuss which treatment is most appropriate for your type of acne and also assess if you would benefit from cosmetic interventions for scarring.
Rosacea may present as acne in adults or with symptoms such as easy flushing, persistent blood vessels in the skin (telangiectasia) or with facial swelling. Treatments include gels, creams, tablet antibiotics, isotretinoin/Roaccutane and laser treatments.
